Internships at ACEI
ACEI sometimes has internships available during the summer months, with applications being reviewed during the spring. Interns are given the opportunity to gain work experience consisting primarily of online research and data gathering that will contribute to the development of briefing papers and other types of resources. In addition to their day-to-day assignments, interns will have the opportunity to attend various meetings related to childhood education (Association for Childhood Education International, 2015).
Interns should be enrolled in a graduate degree program that focuses on global education issues with a particular interest in children’s education. A focus on one specific aspect of childhood education, such as basic education or early childhood development, is also acceptable. Interns who have had some international experience(s) working or living outside the U.S. are preferred.
Internships typically range from 8 -12 weeks. All interns must reside in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area during their assignment and are responsible for arranging their own housing and transportation. Interns are based at the ACEI Headquarters located at 1101 16th Street NW, Washington DC, 20036, a few blocks north of the White House.
ACEI offers a monthly stipend.

DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT AND QUALITY
The Director of Program Development and Quality shares in the overall responsibility for the leadership, direction and coordination of the Country Office program. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in Zambia, the Director of Program Development and Quality is responsible for overseeing the development and resource mobilization of high quality, innovative programs that deliver immediate and lasting change for children and monitor the quality of the implementation of those programs. Lead and oversee provision of in-country and international technical assistance and appropriate monitoring and evaluation. The Director of Program Development and Quality also provides leadership to ensure excellence in serving members and their donors, in full spectrum programming (i.e. both development and as appropriate emergency contexts) Save the Children, 2015).
Qualifications and experience
Essential
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience (with 3 years in similar/senior positions in a country office setting) in an International NGO environment, including experience designing, directing and coordinating programs in both emergency and development contexts
- Experience in more than one of the Save the Children priority sectors: education; child protection; child rights governance; health and nutrition (HIV/AIDS); child poverty; emergencies.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills in an international setting
- Significant experience leading strategic planning and in program design and proposal development
- Strong understanding of different methodologies of monitoring and evaluation and operational research and experience in developing integrated MEAL systems
- Ability to effectively establish a learning culture within an organization
- Experience in successfully establishing and managing collaborative relationships and partnerships with donors, government, local partners and Home Office counterparts
- Strong representation and advocacy and influencing skills at all levels
- Experience of building professional networks, resulting in securing significant new opportunities/partnerships for the organization
- Demonstrable track record of leading change which has led to significant results for the organization and their stakeholders
- Experience of managing and developing a high performance team including effective performance management and utilization of capacity building, coaching, and mentoring skills
- Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
- Superior analytical and communication skills. Effective negotiator, with the ability to positively influence cross departmental and cross sector working
- Ability and willingness to dramatically change work practices and hours, and work with incoming teams, in emergencies
- Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles including rights-based approaches
- Fluency in written and spoken English
