Time Well Spent

Wow if you would have told me that in March of 2014 I would have my Master of Science in Early Childhood I would have said no way. I contemplated for many years going back to school, filling out college interest cards only to tell recruiters later I have changed my mind. It was fear, fear of not being able to handle the challenge. Wow it is done I did it and I must tell my testimony that if you want it bad enough you can do it. We must look fear in the eye and say move out of the way.

  • Walden has exposed me to international students. I was able to get a glimpse of how other early childhood professionals had to deal with. I also learned about agencies internationally that are fighting for quality programming in early childhood. World Forum is one international agency who’s “mission to promote an on-going global exchange of ideas on the delivery of quality services for young children in diverse settings”(World Forum, 2015).
  • Also learning about the Community of Practice where you have individuals who are able to share and support you in doing the work. I also learned that I have community of practice at work and in other parts of my life such as the different organizations to which I belong.
  • Leaders set the tone of the agency. I never thought much about leadership styles but through the course learned about different leadership styles from authentic, to democratic as well as Laisse Faire. Through this process I not learned about leadership styles, but I also learned my leadership style and presently think it is between authentic and democratic. I know as I am exposed to taking on more of a leadership role it will continue to develop.

Working with children families and staff is something I am very passionate about and I am looking forward to all the new possibilities. I want to continue working with my current employer on enhancing the professional opportunities we provide and guiding teachers to continue their development. I am also looking forward to a new position with my current employer and my Masters as allowed the possbility.

I have to say WOW! We are done. I would like to thank all my classmates as well as all the professors that provided new insights as well as guidance as we moved through the program. I know this is not the end, but the beginning as we take what we have learned and share and encourage others. In order for our field to grow we must continue to grow.

6165 The End

Hello and goodbye to all of my colleagues. I want to thank everyone who commented during our discussions and blogs. I am still on my educational journey, but I know I am approaching the finish line and I can’t wait. I wish you all the best.

6165 Adjourning

The hardest group to leave would be the high performing group because this group has already moved through the norming phase. I think it would be hard because the group is able to function and work on the project without assistance. When you are working with a team that each of you understands how the other works allows you to make great progress on projects.
I was in another cohort several years ago working on infant/toddler certification and we worked together during the day at various agencies and then attended evening classes together and it was such a network of support. At the end of session we had a graduation of sorts where we were able to share how experiences with each other, along with our family of our journey together.
I think at the end of the master’s degree program we will all go our separate ways. I think some of us might participate in the commencement ceremony and others of us will await that Diploma in the mail and have our own private celebration with our family and friends.
I think adjourning is an essential part of team work because it can give the team since of closure and completeness. It gives participants and opportunity to review the end result of their work together.

6165 Conflict Strategies

Two strategies that I have learned that help me to manage conflict are learning to respond and not react by controlling my emotions so that I can address the concerns at hands. Another strategy that I continue to work with is to focus on the issue at hand and not other related issues that might have occurred. It is import to control my emotions because when we react from emotions you are not able to clearly communicate our concerns. I am also learning to focus on the current issue when I have a conflict because sometimes I want to bring up old issues into the present situation that puts more stress on the other person. Learning how to address conflict is necessary for our personal lives and work lives so we can respectful resolve conflicts and have healthier relationships.

6165 Communication

Reviewing how the similarities and differences I was actually surprised to see how close the scores of my husband and friend fell into the same levels. I thought my friend’s perception might be closer to me, because we relate have had some of the same experiences with our families. I thought my husband’s scores would be drastically different because I thought his perception of how I communicate was different and because he say I don’t communicate the same with him, but his score now says otherwise.

Self- concept “your awareness and understanding of who you are__ as interpreted and influenced by your thoughts, actions, abilities, values, goals and ideals” (O’Hair & Wiemann, 2012, p. 47). It informs how I interact with others both in my personal life as well as my professional life. If I have a positive self- concept of myself then I will treat others in a respectful way. If my self -concept is negative then my interactions and communications will be that way as well.

Self-monitoring “is the ability to watch your environment and others in it for cues as to how to present yourself in a particular situation” (Snyder, 1974). This would help in your personal and professional life because you learn your audience and use that to adjust your verbal or nonverbal behavior so communicating in a way that is respectful and relatable.

O’Hair, D., & Wiemann, M. (2012). Real communication: An introduction. New York:
Bedford/St. Martin’s.
Snyder, B. (1974). Self-monitoring of expressive behavior. Journal of Personality and Social
Psychology, 30, 566-537.

6165 Communication

Yes I would say that I communicate differently with people in my workplace, my family and friends. I am able to say I have friends in my workplace, but communicate different when we are in are tight group always trying to maintain a level of professionalism while in the office. Talking with friends you can vent and let off steam. When talking with my mom and other elders of the family always remembering to maintain a respectful tone, because they are the elders. I go to my family for advice and know they will speak the truth and I need to be still and listen which is hard sometime because I want to interject my opinion. I would have to say no matter which group I am talking with I do my best maintain a level of respect, because I don’t want to speak or have it appear that I am trying to be hurtful.

Based on what I have learned this week, three strategies I would use to help me communicate more effectively with the people or groups are being aware of my nonverbal behavior, because it is not what you say that always offend. I would also you the Platinum Rule “do to others as they themselves would like to be treated because I need to take me out of the situation and take on the view of the person I am speaking to. I would be flexible because when you are getting to know or know people you sometimes have to adjust your communication style.

6165 Non-Verbal Communication

The show that I watched was Criminal Minds I saw a busy office with people working at computers and walking round. The female character the camera zoomed in on was doing work on her computer writing emails. A picture of a car came on her computer screen and she responded writing a note back about price of car. She was alone standing in the rain and a person pulled up and she looked happy because she had a smile on her face. The person came out opened car door on driver side got back in looked straight ahead. I could not see the passengers face and the person looked straight ahead. When they returned to female’s job she still looked very comfortable because she exited the car and got back in with his assistance because he opened door like a gentleman.

The feeling expressed based on the nonverbal behavior I observed was female character looked happy and excited initially and the male character seemed helpful because he got out helping the female character get in and out of the car. The female character face changed when she got back in the car after a short while her face changed and she appeared scared. The male character demeanor changed when he took the lock of the door out and he hit the female character once he came back into vehicle.

I am not a watcher of Criminal Minds, but I had a preconceived notion that a crime was going to occur just because of the title, but I did not know when. I assumed that the character felt secure because she was smiling and I thought she didn’t know much about cars, but when the sound came on she was giving stats about the car she was looking at and the male character was impressed. I did not initially think he was a bad guy until she took out the look of car and hit the female character. I think I was close in my assumption, but it was not until the scene played out.

I learned that just because something seems good by first glance you need to proceed with caution. The male character was engaging in deception because his motives were not to sell a car, but to find someone to hurt.
